Here
at the Register we were a little alarmed when F2046
appeared on eBay with perhaps the briefest of descriptions.
The listing merely stated: "Please
ring the owner direct for more info on XXXXXXXXX.
Long MOT on this 2 litre 16 valve kit car based
on the Dolomite Sprint engine. Grey leather interior,
nice tidy car and very quick."
Thankfully,
the sale was accompanied by a generous raft of
photographs that did much to demonstrate that
F2046 was, in fact, one of the best Latham F2s
ever built.
Originally
constructed by Martin Highfield, the car had subsequently
gone (very rapidly!) through a string of new owners
before appearing on eBay, but the quality and
attention to detail inherent in Martin's original
build was still there for all to see, despite
signs of age and the many thousands of miles that
the car had covered since its construction.
Martin
was prepared to spend many hours on small details
during the early stages, and this is no better
displayed than by the hand-forged polished aluminum
surrounds he made for the headlights. These gave
the car a look that was even more Jaguar-esque,
but also in some ways, more finished.
Martin
also devoted much, time, effort and expense on
the interior, which has a full leather interior
and wood-veneer dashboard.
It
was - still is - a lovely car, and there was much
relief all round when F2046 was withdrawn from
sale on eBay and the owner decided to keep it
after all.
